Pushpika De Silva made the headlines after her Mrs. Sri Lanka’s crown snatched amid the divorce rumors, on April 4th, 2021 Mrs. Sri Lanka’s competition was aired on National TV but viewers were shocked to see the drama, Pushpika De Silva was crowned as the 2021 ‘Mrs. Sri Lanka’ but the excitement ended in tears and humiliation after 2020 winner Caroline snatched her crown.
Just after Silva was crowned 2020 winner Caroline came forward on the stage and announced that De Silva was actually not eligible for the crown as she “is a divorcee”. Furthermore, Caroline told that the competitors must be married and not divorced. In the video, 2020 winner Caroline snatched the crown from De Silva and placed it on the runner-up, but the controversy didn’t end there. According to the pageant organizers, De Silva is the winner and apologized and confirmed that she is not a divorcee, also the crown would be returned to De Silva.
On April 6th, Pushpika De Silva took to Instagram and wrote a lengthy post, said “My dear, dear, respectable, intelligent Sri Lankans and people all over the world, I know that you are looking forward to my response to this unexpected event. There is so much to say, but I will only mention the essentials here.
First of all, I would like to express my respect and gratitude to the jury for selecting me as the winner of the Wedding Beauty Crown 2020. Secondly, I think, for the first time in the history of the Miss World, not in Sri Lanka, I have been insulted and my crown has been snatched away in front of everyone, but as of this writing, I keep my head straight and proud as before. I, myself, and for me, this is just another incident.
The pain of the injuries to my skull when the world bridal beauty snatched my crown from my head, rather than the pain I felt when I lost the crown, “.. Ammi’s head hurts ..? Does it hurt Ammi?” I can not bear the pain of hearing my little son say. But for me, as a single woman, this is a historic moment that raises the voices of men and women all over the world, regardless of party affiliation, race, religion, or caste. I say that this love of you all is tremendous strength to me.
On the other hand, I am not a divorced woman. As of this writing, I responsibly state that I am not a divorced woman. If I am divorced, I challenge them to submit my divorce papers. I have not hidden from the world that I am with my child. I also have personal reasons for staying that way. But, separation is one thing. Divorce is a separate matter. I’m not divorced yet. If I had not qualified for the tournament at the outset, they would have removed me. They weren’t asleep until I came so far after passing the rest of the races one by one.
I was the Sri Lankan beauty queen of 2011. Ten years later, last night, I was crowned a Sri Lankan bridal beauty queen by a panel of judges. At the same time, I became the wedding beauty queen in the hearts of all of you in Sri Lanka and around the world So, even though that symbolic crown has been snatched from my head, I would like to inform you that I have already taken the necessary legal action against that injustice and insult.
Finally, a real queen is not a woman who snatches another woman’s crown, but a woman who secretly sets the other woman’s crown !!.”
Later, in another post, she wrote “Dear Sri Lankans and my friends all over the world, First and foremost, the National Director of this pageant, Hon. First of all, I would like to express my heartfelt gratitude to all of you, including Rishini, who have supported me in one word or another, both nationally and internationally.
I do not hate anyone and I forgive those who do so to me at that moment. Nothing can be won by hatred. Throughout the tournament, I tried to use my mother tongue, Sinhala. I used English when absolutely necessary. There is no ban on bridal beauty using her mother tongue in this competition. It is the identity and pride of my country. But even that was met with an error by some of those at the top of the competition. I won in the midst of so many such problems.
At today’s press conference, I spoke about women, divorced women, single mothers, and children. But all that aside, there is a lot of talks now about a future political journey, which is one issue, so I have to say something about it.
What people expect from me at the moment is the role of a wedding beauty, not the role of a political figure. At this moment too, I am making my full commitment to winning the forthcoming Bridal Beauty Pageant representing Sri Lanka, aside from everything else. Thank you ..!.”
In a Press release, Mrs. World Inc wrote a public apology, which reads “We are deeply disturbed and sincerely regret the behavior of our current titleholder, Mrs. Caroline Jurie, Mrs. World 2020, at the crowning. Her actions go against the Mrs. Sri Lanka code of conduct and the predetermined regulations she is obliged to follow during her reign.”
