Daunte Wright was from Plymouth Minneapolis, 20 years old man was fatally shot dead by a police officer on Sunday in Brooklyn Center, about 10 miles north of Minneapolis near where the death of George Floyd last year the witnesses and authorities said.
The crowd gathered were near the scene where the driver died, involved largely nonviolent, some people jumped on a police vehicle and broke the window glassed and people were seen chanting “Hands up, don’t shoot,” and “Black Lives They Matter Here,” outside the police building. On late Sunday, police officers in Helmets and armor formed a protective line around the Brooklyn Center Police Department Headquarters, by the crowd of protesters gathered. The police confirmed that the gathering was unlawful and asked the protester to disperse, when they continued to protest they released a gas irritant to disperse them.
One of the reporters confirmed over Twitter stating “I’m in the Minneapolis suburb of Brooklyn Center, where about 100 people are still protesting in the street after a 20-year-old man was reportedly shot by the police and then died”.
Brooklyn Center Police Department said that the victim was pulled over for a traffic violation and determined that the driver had an outstanding warrant. The officers tried to arrest the driver but the police say he “re-entered the vehicle,”. In the statement “One officer discharged their firearm, striking the driver,” added, “The vehicle then traveled several blocks before striking another vehicle.”
Wright’s mother confirms on the Facebook live video that, her son is 20 years old, and confirmed that her son had called her up when an officer pulled him over and also told that he was in the vehicle his family gifted him over a week and was driving along with his girlfriend. The victim’s mother said “He called me at about 1:40, said he was getting pulled over by the police,” added “He said they pulled him over because he had air fresheners hanging from his rearview mirror.”.
She also confirmed that police asked him regarding the vehicle insurance on the call she said “I said when the police officer comes back to the window, put him on the phone and I will give him the insurance information,” added “Then I heard the police officer come to the window and say, ‘Put the phone down and get out of the car.’ And Daunte said why. He said, ‘We’ll explain to you when you get out of the car”. Later she heard the police officer saying “Daunte, don’t run and then the officer said, ‘put the phone down and hung it up.”.
When the victim’s mother tried calling her son after the incident multiple times, his girlfriend answered the call and confirmed that Wright was shot dead and she was safe and had no injuries. When they reached toward the spot. His mother pleaded with the officer to move her son’s body because it was there since afternoon but the Brooklyn Center police officer told the family members that they can not move the victim’s body until the members of the Bureau of Criminal Apprehension, arrive and investigate.
The journalist Kim Hyatt shared the video of the scene said, “Tense scene at the intersection of 63rd and Lee Ave N in Brooklyn Center. A crowd is shouting at the press and police saying that an officer didn’t have to kill a man. BCA is here investigating.” Added, “Mother Katie Wright sent me this photo of her son with her grandson Daunte Jr. He’ll be 2 years old in July.”
One person said “Police keep killing and harassing Black people even with the backdrop of the George Floyd trial going on. They don’t care. There’s no reform for this. Abolish the police. Love to the family and friends of Daunte Wright.” and others saddened by the incident and wrote “Even in the middle of Derek Chauvin’s trial, the police can’t stop killing. Minneapolis police killed Daunte Wright, a young, unarmed Black man, this afternoon.”
