Alan McLoughlin was a Footballer and played for various English clubs, in 1983 he began his career as a trainee at Manchester United and turned professional in 1985–86 season, at Manchester United he featured over 40 times for the reserves but never played a first-team game. Later, he played in a trial tournament for Stoke City, where its an English professional football club based in Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire. However, Alan was never singed to the team.

In 1986, Alan joined Swindon Town, is a professional football club based in Swindon, Wiltshire, England. Previously, Oldham Athletic offered him a one-week trial and also featured in the exit trial match at Durham University. In 1986, Alan made his debut in a 2–2 draw with Newport County and played for seven months but decided to leave the team after some friction with then-manager Lou Macari. Alan moved to Torquay United on loan and left for Southampton in December 1990 for a club-record £1 million.

Later, Alan was loaned to Aston Villa and then to Portsmouth, in 1992 he moved to Fratton Park for £400,000 and made 29 appearances and in the 1992 FA Cup Semi-Final he helped Portsmouth to reach the semi-final, scoring the winning goal in the quarter-final tie with Nottingham Forest, but they lost to Liverpool in the semi-final. In 1999, Alan was sold for £260,000 to Wigan Athletic but he suffered from injuries that impacted his game and in 2001 he moved on a free transfer to Rochdale.

At Rochdale, he played 22 games and scored three goals, he helped Rochdale to reach the playoffs in 2001-02. From 2002–03 season, Alan served as the player coach at Forest Green and featured in Rovers FA Cup first-round tie with Exeter City. Then, he began his career as co-commentator on defunct Portsmouth-based radio station The Quay and joined BBC Radio Solent in 2011 as matchday co-commentator for Portsmouth matches. In 2011, he was appointed in Portsmouth as Senior Academy Coach, and in 2013 Alan was appointed Portsmouth’s first-team coach, on December 4th, 2014 he was released from his position as the first-team coach at Portsmouth.
