Pita Taufatofua aka Pita Nikolas Taufatofua is a Tongan taekwondo practitioner and skier. On Friday at the Tokyo games opening ceremony Taufatofua went shirtless, oiled-up look as he carried his country’s flag. Back in the 2016 Rio Olympics, he went viral for the same reason after he marched shirtless, with the island nation’s flag-bearer and covered in coconut oil. This year he was the only athlete to go shirtless. Taufatofua told PEOPLE in 2018 “I had no idea how much attention that would get. In Tonga where you have a lot of traditional dances, the oil and the outfit I was wearing was quite normal,” he added “But in Rio, it turned out to be a pretty big deal,” continued “I wanna show people who aren’t into a sport or are having struggles in their life that they can do something completely new, completely out of their comfort zone, and enjoy that journey and get somewhere with it,” further said “People say, ‘Man you’re crazy!’ It’s like yeah, I am, but you can be crazy and you can achieve as well. And that’s what I want to show people,’ he added. “I want them to come on the journey, and I want them to be a part of this as well.”
After his appearance at the Tokyo Games opening ceremony 2020. Pita Taufatofua tweeted “Thanks all for the tags and love. Not sure if going viral during a pandemic is a good thing, but I appreciate all the messages and support.” For which many of his fans responded. One user tweeted “Bruce with the line of the night six hours into this athletes march as Pita Taufatofua comes out swimming in baby oil for a third Games running.’ He’s the Usain Bolt of flagbearers.” Another user said “The return of Pita Taufatofua I missed the ceremony but look for and to watching the Tongan delegation on replay and catching my friend @AminiFonua in the parade. All the best to you dear, and all the Tongan athletes!.”
