On June 30, the teen shared with her more than 18,000 Instagram followers her acceptance letter from the University of Alabama at Birmingham. Alena is presently enrolled at Arizona State University, thus it appears like she will begin the course in 2024.
According to Alena, she is the second-youngest person overall and the youngest African American to enroll in a US medical school. Alena is a child prodigy, so she didn’t just decide to apply to medical school while she was still in middle school.
When the child was just three years old, she was reading chapter books, and by the time she was 11 years old, she had already taken several high school courses. Alena finished high school when she was 12 and enrolled in online courses at ASU.

She filed for early entrance to the University of Alabama’s Heersink School of Medicine for the 2024 academic year after receiving encouragement from her family, teachers, and advisors. The committed student developed an early interest in STEM fields (science, technology, engineering, and math), and in the summer of 2021, she was chosen to join the National Aeronautics and Space Administration as its youngest intern.
Alena completed a variety of tasks while employed by NASA, including online research for the La Canada Flintridge, California-based Jet Propulsion Laboratory. After reading a news article about the aspiring engineer, Alena’s mentor, Clayton Turner, the director of the organization’s Langley Research Center, hired her.
Despite being a nominee for Time’s Top Kid of the Year award in 2022, she has won numerous accolades in her early life and is still devoted to helping others. Alena established the Brown STEM Girl nonprofit organization outside of her studies to encourage and award scholarships to young girls of color pursuing STEM.
